Training and supervision

Once basic safety training has been completed, specific training for individual tasks and hazards will help workers understand how and why a job must be done safely.

NSW legislation requires you to provide your workers with any information, instruction, training and supervision necessary to ensure their health and safety at work.

To decide how much training and supervision is required, consider the level of risk of the job as well as the skills, experience, competence and age of the workers. Supervision of workers ensures that they are following safe work procedures.

When a worker fails to follow safe work procedures such as not using safety equipment or interfering with safety mechanisms treat it like any other breach of discipline to show your workers you are serious about safety.

Training in isolation will not achieve your outcomes but it should be considered as part of your overall strategy. Training means that not only will workers do the job safely they’ll do it better and, therefore, be more productive.
