Use the Manual handling risk guide to help identify work that involves manual handling that may pose a risk to workers. You can then use this information to develop safe work procedures. Use the hierarchy of controls to eliminate and control risks. Monitor and review all systems and procedures on a regular basis.
When assessing manual handling risks consider:
- actions and movements
- the workplace and workstation layout
- the workers posture and position
- the duration and frequency of manual handling
- the load location and distance moved
- weights and forces
- the characteristics of loads and equipment
- work organisation
- the work environment
- the worker’s age, skill and experience
- the clothing required
- any special needs of the worker.
